Vietnam:Pfizer Inc. has been fined $3.6 million for illegally selling, marketing and promoting Viagra over the Internet. The drug maker has denied the fine and said it is “disproportionate” in terms of its business to its competitors.
In a statement to The New York Times, Pfizer said the company has received “no evidence” of illegal sales, marketing or promotion of Viagra and it “continues to violate federal and state laws.”
The company has been accused of selling counterfeit Viagra in Hong Kong, where Pfizer is based, in a bid to “reduce the likelihood of counterfeiting of Viagra in Asia.”
Pfizer’s patent on Viagra runs from about 20 years ago. In 2012, Pfizer was fined $2.4 million but won a settlement in the case, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June.
In 2013, the company agreed to a $3.5 million fine, which it would not pay but agreed to pay in April this year. In 2015, it was suspended from the company’s business for illegal promotion and sale of Viagra in Asia, as well as for “conduct related to marketing and promotion of the drug.”
Pfizer has denied the fine and said it is “disproportionate in terms of the conduct it has been engaged in” in selling and promoting counterfeit Viagra. The company “continues to violate federal and state laws.”
In its statement to The Times, Pfizer said it has received “no evidence” of illegal sales, marketing or promotion of Viagra and it “continues to violate federal and state laws.”
Pfizer’s statement also said the company will not stop making Viagra and said it will continue to continue to sell and promote it for “the duration that is prescribed by a doctor.”
